South Beach Diet
, was made popular by Miami, Florida-area Dr. Arthur Agatston who is a cardiologist, he emphasizes the consumption of "good fats" and "good carbohydrates." South Beach diet says it's ok to take fats and animal proteins in meals, such as chicken, turkey, and fish, as well as with cheeses, yogurt, nuts, and milk. You also must cut down on your carbs here as well. Exercise is not important here, so relax.
The diet has 3 phases. In all the phases of the diet, Dr. Agatston suggests lowering your consumption of bad fats. In Phase one, which lasts two weeks, this helps to eliminate insulin resistance by avoiding high glycemic carbohydrates, like sugar, candy, bread, potatoes, fruit, cereals, and grains. Dr. Agatston says the body will lose its insulin resistance in this phase period, and your body starts to use extra storage of body fat, resulting in you losing around 13 pounds.
Now after two weeks, Phase 2 starts. Whole grain foods and fruits are returned to the diet, in smaller amounts than in phase 1. When you obtain your desired weight, Phase3 now starts. In Phase 3 the diet says to eat three servings of whole grains and three servings of fruit per day.
The South beach Diet distinguishes between good and bad carbohydrates, and good and bad fats unlike the Atkins Diet.
The South Beach diet consists of a permanent change in your way of eating, flexibility, and lastly, a variety of foods to eat. Consuming whole grains and big amounts of vegetables is needed, along with large amounts of mono and polyunsaturated fats, including omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish. The diet says to stay away from refined processed foods, high-fat meats, and saturated fats.
The diet does not want you to be a calorie counter or limiting your servings and Agatston wants you to eat until you are full. You are allowed to eat 6 meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with small snacks between each meal and still lose weight.
A 2004 study of the South Beach Diet by Agatston, et al., reviewed a 1998-1999 trial completed by 54 participants over the course of one year. A 2005 study of the South Beach Diet conducted by Kraft Foods was completed by 69 subjects over the time of just under 3 months. Both studies showed great results for the groups using The South Beach diet.
