The Atkins Diet Approach was developed by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1960s. This is the best known of the low-carbohydrate diets on the market. The Atkins dieters can eat all of the meats, cheeses, eggs and fats, oils and butter they want. Carbohydrates are restricted to around 20 grams a day in the first 2 weeks on the Atkins diet; a weekly 5 gram gain is followed until you establish your critical carbohydrate level for maintenance. This means you need to stay away mostly from pasta, potatoes, breads, waffles and pancakes. Exercise is not that important here or stressed!

The Atkins Diet consists of 4 phases, the induction phase is the first phase which causes your body to go into ketosis.

Your carb intake is restricted to 20 net grams a day. Foods you are allowed to eat are most meats, up to 4 ounces of cheeses, 3 tablespoons of heavy cream, 2 cups of salad vegetables. Caffeine and alcoholic drinks are not allowed.

The Induction Phase you can see yourself losing anywhere from 6 to 8 pounds per week.

Ketostix are used by diabetics to monitor when they enter the ketosis, or fat burning, phase.

Just watching your weight will work, so you really don't need the ketstix. When you start to lose 1-2 pounds a day means you are in ketosis.

The second phase of Atkins diet is The Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) phase which consists of an increase in carbohydrate intake, but remaining at levels where weight loss occurs. The third phase is the pre maintenance where carbohydrates are increased again by 10 net carbs a week from their selection. The main goal here is to locate your critical carbohydrate level for maintenance, so you don't gain any weight here. The fourth and final phase is known as the lifetime maintenance where unprocessed foods are recommended and you can choose one of the previous phases if you start to put on weight.

Price of meals is expensive, little more expensive than Weight Watchers and less expensive than Jenny Craig.

The low carb diet always yields a bigger weight loss in the first 6 months, but not so much towards year end. Lower triglyceride levels are evident and good cholesterol HDL levels raised which is what you want to see happen. Is the Atkins diet right for you?
