Why Do Women Burn Less Fat Than Men?
Women and men aren't designed or built the same way, so fat is lost faster
on a man's frame versus a woman's frame. The question we must ask is why? For
the answer, let's go back to biology to shed some light on this subject, so
we can all understand this fact. This all has to deal with hormones, men have
lot of testosterone which determines and guides the shape of our bones and delicate
balance of fat to muscle ratio in men. This hormone tells certain parts of the
man's body to grow hair and regulates muscle mass as well. Hence, the more muscle
mass, the more calories are burned as fuel. Think of muscle as your 24 hour
furnace constantly burning up fat on your body. Women on the other hand, have
estrogen and progesterone governing how their body develops. The female hormones
governs how much muscle and body fat you will have. Women will gain their weight
much faster than guys and have a more difficult time of taking off the weight
via exercise. Women will always have to work twice as hard as a guy to lose
that body fat. A man and a woman can train with the same weights and do the
same reps, yet the man will show more muscle gain and hence, burn fat faster.
That's just the way it is. Yes, women have it worse than men because of society
dictates a woman should have a thin body in this era. The yoyo effect comes
into play as a woman loses weight, then gains some back. Then tries another
diet and loses the weight and later puts more weight on. This triggers the woman's
body to hang on to the existing body fat. Therefore, their weight loss becomes
harder each and every year. Then it's only human nature to try another diet
or exercise program or both.
Published on the BBC was a study that had 62 obese women who exercised four
hours per week and cooked themselves healthy meals showed a marked increase
in their own self image. They lost nine pounds over three months and their blood
pressure, heart rate and blood cholesterol all dropped which is what you want
to see in a healthy person. The moral of this story is maybe women should start
to move away from chasing a certain weight to just staying healthy and feeling
good regardless of their weight. Everybody doesn't like a thin woman. Many men
were asked, who would you rather be with a thin woman or a curvaceous one? The
popular vote from the men in the study was a curvaceous figure. The average
dress size today is a size 12. |
